Recently I looked back over some of my photographs and noticed a pattern: no one was alone. It's always much more fun to be captured by a lens with a best friend, isn't it?
Some intimate black and white photographs of my family through the years.
Because I shoot with black and white film, I am always looking at light, shadows and movement. So many of these shots were a moment that caught my eye and then I spent the time to capture it.
I had the opportunity to travel to Cuba with the Maine Photography Workshops. I spent 10 wonderful days walking around the city trying to capture the culture. I spent days with the boxing boys and at the ballet/dance school. And along the way, I photographed the streets of Havana.
My first trip with a photographic workshop began with the famous photographer, Mary Ellen Mark. I had admired her work for so long and was beyond excited to spend 10 days with her in Mexico.
Our trip started as I bumped into her at the airport and we got to know each other as New Yorkers traveling to Mexico. So much of our time was spent with Mary Ellen. She was a wonderful teacher as she shared so much of herself. I spent time on the streets of Oaxaca and just outside of town visiting families trying to capture the essence of this wonderful place.
